The breeding goal for this mix:
A range of saturated and vibrant (but not overly bright or electric), jewel-tones to fill your garden with joy and brighten up your day without blinding you.
Notes on 'Windfall Joy' from Barb the Breeder:
- These juicy colours are loved by the pollinators! Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to them like magnets.
- The seeds for this mix were harvested from colourful but not overly bright and garish blooms. However, a number of blooms that are a bit too bright (most likely bright orange and pink), and a few that too pale are likely to pop up. Pull those out and let the mid-tones take over, if you wish!
- The plants in this mix can get very tall (up to 4-5 feet in the right conditions) and have a mix of medium to some very large, very full flowers.
- In 2025 'Windfall Joy' was grown in an expanded and isolated plot, allowing us to extend the range of this mix and produce more seeds.
- In 2025, our line of 'Windfall Cheer' zinnias is not being sold separately, but some 'Cheer' seed has been included in this mix.
- This mix brings me (and the neighbours, and pollinators!) so much joy. I will continue to select this mix for saturated, mid-tone, jewel colours in the coming years!
Please Note:
All seeds are harvested by hand, by Barb, to ensure that they are from the exact plants pictured. However, my mixes are not stable or predictable. They are diverse, surprising, magical, and fun! Don't expect all of your flowers to look exactly like the photos:
- These seeds are mixes of new varieties that are at various stages of progress in my breeding program (not stable varieties).
- These seeds are from flowers that have been freely pollinated by local pollinators. So, although our mixes are isolated from each other by distance, some degree of cross pollination with other zinnias in our breeding program is possible.
- I work hard to shape the aesthetics of my mixes, but there will always be some recessive genes for unwanted colours and shapes present in my highly diverse populations. This means that when some plants cross pollinate (even within the same mix), some unpredictable results can occur. In my breeding work, I pull out and discard (cull) these unwanted recessive genes.
- The 50 seed packet gives you the opportunity to grow more than you may need and remove any plants with characteristics that you don't want.
- The mix of seeds in each packet will be completely unique. Which seeds you get will be "luck of the draw".
- The aesthetics of each seed mix will change from year to year, as I continue my breeding work, and push the mixes in new and different directions.
