Breeding goals for this variety:
Globe shaped, ombre coloured flowers in a range of peach tones with shades of salmon, pink, and subtle orange.
Notes on 'Windfall Peach' from Barb the Breeders:
- Windfall Peach is our most stable and predictable variety, but it is not quite 100% true to type. I expect the next generation of seeds from this variety to produce true to type flowers (1.5-2 inch diameter, fully double, with various shades of peach colouring) in about 80-90% of plants.
- In 2024 we grew this variety in an isolation tunnel made of bee netting and added flies to act as pollinators.
- In 2025 this variety was grown in a field plot isolated by distance, and pollinated by the bees to increase seed stock.
One of the most interesting things about this variety is that they are ever (subtly) changing. At the beginning of the season, they are the most delicate, fresh, mellow shades. As the season progresses and the flowers mature, their colours get deeper, richer and more nuanced, often with a striking ombre effect. When the weather gets cool at the very end of the season, their peachy tones turn more orange - perfect for fall (refer to the photo where I am holding a bundle). When the stems are cut and have been in a vase for a day or two, the colours often become softer and the centers get lighter.
These make great flowers for cutting or for colour in the garden. When planted close together (6-9 inches) in farm-style rows, they get tall with long stems that are great for cutting (support will likely be needed). When they are planted farther apart (~12 inches), and are pinched, they produce stronger, shorter, bushier plants perfect for a colourful display in the garden.
This variety is a workhorse- it is very productive and strong (particularly resistant to powdery mildew), making it very popular with cut flower growers.
Florists love the size, shape and colour of these flowers to use as fillers in bouquets.
All seeds are harvested by hand, by Barb, to ensure that they are from the exact plants pictured. However, my mixes are not stable or predictable. They are diverse, surprising, magical, and fun! Don't expect all of your flowers to look exactly like the photos:
- These seeds are mixes of new varieties that are at various stages of progress in my breeding program (not stable varieties).
- These seeds are from flowers that have been freely pollinated by local pollinators. So, although our mixes are isolated from each other by distance, some degree of cross pollination with other zinnias in our breeding program is possible.
- I work hard to shape the aesthetics of my mixes, but there will always be some recessive genes for unwanted colours and shapes present in my highly diverse populations. This means that when some plants cross pollinate (even within the same mix), some unpredictable results can occur. In my breeding work, I pull out and discard (cull) these unwanted recessive genes.
- The 50 seed packet size gives you the opportunity to grow more than you may need and remove any plants with characteristics that you don't want.
- The mix of seeds in each packet will be completely unique. Which seeds you get will be "luck of the draw".
- The aesthetics of each seed mix will change from year to year, as I continue my breeding work, and push the mixes in new and different directions.
