The breeding goal for this mix:
A harmonious blend of large, fluffy, romantic blooms in muted shades, to bring peace and serenity to your garden and bouquets.
Notes on 'Windfall Peace" from Barb the Breeders:
- Early this growing season (2025), I lost many of my best 'Windfall Peace' seedlings to problems with seed starting soil. Although it means that a few of my most anticipated crosses were not included in this year's mix, I could not be happier with the results of what grew this year (I mean, check out those photos!). Despite the early season losses, I was able to increase stock of my very favourite creamy 'cafe' coloured double flowers.
- Many of the flower lines in this mix contain distant semi-cactus genes. This often gives them a more fluffy, curly, frilly, wide-faced form.
- There is some overlap in the colours of this mix and the 'Windfall Hope' mix, but overall 'Windfall Peace' has larger, fluffier blooms, with a bit more colour variation. The plants in the 'Peace' mix' are also generally larger than those in 'Hope'.
- Although the seeds for this mix are from the soft coloured blooms shown in the photos, this mix did contain a number of brighter blooms that were culled (removed) at the beginning of the season. You will likely find some brighter colours as well- pull these out and let the soft colours take over, if you wish!
- We will continue to select for the soft, romantic shades and large fluffy shapes in future years of breeding.
Please note:
All seeds are harvested by hand, by Barb, to ensure that they are from the exact plants pictured. However, my mixes are not stable or predictable. They are diverse, surprising, magical, and fun! Don't expect all of your flowers to look exactly like the photos:
- These seeds are mixes of new varieties that are at various stages of progress in my breeding program (not stable varieties).
- These seeds are from flowers that have been freely pollinated by local pollinators. So, although our mixes are isolated from each other by distance, some degree of cross pollination with other zinnias in our breeding program is possible.
- I work hard to shape the aesthetics of my mixes, but there will always be some recessive genes for unwanted colours and shapes present in my highly diverse populations. This means that when some plants cross pollinate (even within the same mix), some unpredictable results can occur. In my breeding work, I pull out and discard (cull) these unwanted recessive genes.
- The 50 seed packet size gives you the opportunity to grow more than you may need and remove any plants with characteristics that you don't want.
- The mix of seeds in each packet will be completely unique. Which seeds you get will be "luck of the draw".
- The aesthetics of each seed mix will change from year to year, as I continue my breeding work, and push the mixes in new and different directions.
